If there is one thing we learned in 2021, it’s that we do enjoy spending more time at home. And when we spend more time at home, we come up with ways to improve our lifestyle. Once we have updated, painted, and done everything possible to improve our indoor space, it’s time to improve our outdoor space as well. Investing in your home has always been a priority, and that will never change. One trend that we are likely to see in 2022 is more homeowners creating a backyard oasis. It’s important to spend as much time as possible outside, so making improvements to your outdoor space is critical. But this is so much more than just adding a few plants and some outdoor furniture; you want to do as much as you can to create the best possible outdoor space. If you are considering making significant changes to your outdoor space in the coming year, here are a few trends you may want to follow.
2022 Landscape Trends
Bringing the Indoors Outside and Vice Versa
We bring elements of nature indoors for our enjoyment, and we also bring indoor elements outdoors for the same reason. This has been going on since the dawn of man. But what has changed over the years and is now a trend is blurring the line between outdoor space and indoor space.
When you stop limiting your living area and calling everything inside and outside your living space, you create a strong bond with nature. In addition to typical houseplants, you can set up a small herb garden indoors and use grow lights when natural light isn’t available. You can also introduce a climbing plant to your indoor space and install a trestle along one of your walls.
You can have a smallish greenhouse built and fill it with all sorts of vegetation. Tropical plants are trending in 2022, and filling your greenhouse with them will give you that exotic feel. Best of all, you don’t have to visit a nursery to enjoy exotic plants; all you do is simply walk into your greenhouse.
Taking the indoors out is also trending. One way to do this is by setting up a garden room that extends your living space and provides a cozy room to enjoy while still getting fresh air. Another way to extend the indoors outside is by utilizing plenty of landscape lighting, including lanterns, string lights, and outdoor lamps.
Bigger is Better
Another trend coming at you in 2022 is bigger is better. A small concrete patio or deck was quite sufficient in the past, but that is changing in the near future. Big patios and decks will be the thing come spring, and there are plenty of reasons why you need that extra space. We are no longer content with a patio that supports a small grill and a couple of lawn chairs. Instead, you need room for a built-in grill, fire feature, and a set of outdoor furniture that includes a large sofa, oversized chairs, and a table that seats eight.
Small pots and planters that house small plants are history; it’s time to go big. Large pots that can hold several larger plants are the way to go. The idea is to install multiple large plants on your patio or deck to make you feel like you are enjoying reading a book or drinking a beverage in the middle of a forest.
Enjoy All Four Seasons Outdoors
This is a trend that started several years ago but is now getting a whole lot more traction. We used to enjoy spending the warm months of spring and summer outside, but as soon as the temperature dropped, we would cover up our grills, put away our lawn chairs and hibernate inside for the winter. But there are ways in which you can set up your outdoor space for year-long enjoyment.
A fire feature is a good start if you want to extend the time you use your outdoor space. Fire features not only warm things up, but they also set the mood as well. Covering your patio will help keep you safe from the elements that drive you inside in the winter. Adding a pavilion or covered pergola is an excellent way to cover your patio. You can also stretch a tarp over your patio or deck or simply add a few outdoor umbrellas for added shelter. You could also go all out and construct an enclosed patio much like a greenhouse.
Smart Technology for Your Outdoor Space
Your house is probably filled with all sorts of interesting gadgets that make your life more convenient. For example, you might have an Amazon Echo, and smart thermostat, and a kitchen faucet that automatically turns on when you swipe your hand under it. It is these gadgets that make our lives easier. And now it’s time we extend this technology to our outdoor space.
Having a sprinkler system that you have to manually set every summer is just not enough for 2022. What you need is a smart sprinkler system that uses soil sensors to gauge when and how much to water your lawn. You can also invest in speakers that are waterproof and still blast out high-quality sound. While you are at it, you might consider adding a television to your outdoor space that can be used in direct sunlight. And you will be so glad when you have your landscape lighting set up with voice control. Lastly, no outdoor space is complete without a cordless robotic lawnmower. You can look forward to watching your lawn getting mowed from the comfort of your hammock.
Of course, you can do whatever you want to make your outdoor space a better place to be. But we do encourage you to set a goal to improve your outdoor space this coming year. We are sure that 2022 will be fun and memorable, mainly because you will enhance your outdoor space and enjoy spending time in it. Hectic work tasks and busy schedules will have us all wanting to come home and relax on the patio. So it is in your best interest to give us a call, and let’s talk about what we can do for you and your outdoor space.
